Like you I have markers for the change of the seasons and in the last week or so some of mine became so obvious I could not ignore them. One are the yellowlegs (a medium size shore bird) that frequent some of the coves that I chase stripers in. A few showed up early this month and their cries are hard to ignore. This week they are flocking up and starting their long trip south. The second is the goldfinches in the yard. I hear them signing late in the summer as they nest and raise their young (they nest late in the summer) but this afternoon I saw a brightly colored male with a few dull colored juveniles in the yard at the house. Finally, I was fishing in the freshwater portion of the Saint George and there were a few maple trees already turning red. I guess summer really is coming to an end, can Labor day be far off?
I expect that stripers will stay well into September and the freshwater fishing for bass pike and eventually trout will only improve for the next couple of months but clearly we are headed into the fall season. I can tell by my calendar that is filled most of the summer now takes a more leisurely pace. Good thing because there are other important chores like stacking firewood that take some of my free time. Don’t worry the wood is already in and stacked not danger of freezing here.
The weather will be more pleasant with warm crystal-clear days and chilly nights from now into early October. This is what I consider the best time of the year and I am ready. Hopefully you are looking forward to it as well and maybe can steal a day away to spend in the outdoors.
