Will I see a moose on a Maine Outdoors Trip?
Everyone asks about seeing a moose while they are out with me. The short answer is that while it is not impossible to see one here in the mid coast but it is not likely. Over many years guiding in coastal Maine I have had two moose great sightings both of those were while on salt water trips. One moose swam past the Lund early one morning less than a cast away. I’ve seen several while not guiding. Including a small bull about a hundred yards from my house more than once and the largest antlers I have ever seen on a bull crossing Route 17 on the way to Rockland.
At one time moose were more common in this part of the state but moose can be very dangerous if they are in a car accident. As a result, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has reduced the moose population to a low level in the area.
Recommended Moose-Watching Areas in Maine
In addition to our trips, here are a few other spots in Maine where you might have the opportunity to see a moose in the wild:
Baxter State Park: Located in northern Maine, this park is known for its rugged beauty and abundant moose population. Hike the trails or take a drive for a chance to spot a moose.
Rangeley Lakes Region: This area in western Maine is famous for its pristine lakes and dense forests. It's a great place to explore on your own or with a local guide to increase your chances of encountering a moose.
Aroostook County: The northernmost part of Maine is sparsely populated and offers vast stretches of wilderness. Visit during the early morning or late evening, when moose are most active.
Moosehead Lake: As the largest lake in Maine, Moosehead Lake is aptly named. Take a moose-watching tour by boat or explore the surrounding trails to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures.
Remember that moose are most active during the early morning and late evening, so plan your outings accordingly. Always respect their space and observe from a safe distance for your safety and the well-being of these amazing animals.
While we can't offer a moose sighting on every trip, the beauty of mid coast Maine more than makes up for it even if there is a small chance of seeing one.
